How to Understand the Next Hop Address in the Network Topology?

Next Hop is a technical routing term. It refers to the next site (IP address) in the IP routing table to the destination address. It tells the router to send the packet to the IP address of the device.

As shown in the figure above, there are five devices, two PCS and three routers:

When PC1 actively communicates with PC2, the next hop from R1 to PC2 is the IP address of interface G0/0/0 of R2 (10.1.12.2/30), and the next hop from R2 to PC2 is the IP address of interface G0/0/1 of R3 (10.1.23.2/30).

When PC2 actively communicates with PC1, the next hop from R3 to PC1 is the IP address of interface G0/0/1 of R2 (10.1.23.1/30), and the next hop from R2 to PC1 is the IP address of interface G0/0/0 of R1 (10.1.12.2/30).

In summary, the next-hop address is the IP address of the interface directly connected to the peer device in the path from the current device to the destination address. In other words, the next-hop address is the IP address of the interface directly connected to the peer device.
