Introduction of the Console Line

Hello everyone, are you addicted to learning every day but can not extricate yourself? Recently many friends, who are freshmen in workplace, using simulator habitually, may knock experiment and yell “I am good at it” when they knock. However, ambitions in the workplace may yield to anxiety faced with a variety of different kinds of manufacturers of equipment connection problem and not knowing how to log in equipment by opening our “god perspective”. Today we are going to take a look at one of our favorite tools — the Console line.

1. Integrated drive-free console cable

First is the most used lines, having no complex structure and no  driving problems, which can be used after plugged in. The range of lines is from 0.3m to 5m. Different lengths are suitable for different situations. For example, if you need to configure a lot of equipment for a long time, you need to use a long line while sitting in the computer room . So you don’t need to worry about the distance. If you do the operational inspection, you can take a short one, while walking with no procrastination. As for me, I usually carry a 1-meter and a 3-meter lines, so that I can work in any environment, and in case that one of machines is accidentally crushed, there is a replacement to use. However, it also has disadvantages, after all, it is dragging a line. If someone did not see and just step on your line, usually connected to the computer with everything on the table, so that all in the table will drop to the ground. It is worst to lose date than to make computer bad.

2. Bluetooth Console cable

This Bluetooth console cable can perfectly overcome the shortcomings  of the above wired console. Wireless is free, the device on the top of the rack no longer needs to hold up the computer configuration, also does not have to worry about a colleague with poor eyesight suddenly tick your console cable, so you can use any posture to configure the device. But the only drawback is that it needs to be charged, and electricity can be used for four or five days once. Nevertheless, because of this standby time, people often forget to charge and run out of power. But for smart network engineers, this problem can be solved by simply going out and borrowing a power bank.

3. Split console cable

This line almost the standard configuration of the old network engineers, usually is composed of a USB to RS232 (DB9) and a console line, and have drawbacks in addition to the shortcomings in the above introduction of the cable console line, such that usually connected part of the two are screw head, so they can not be screwed together and are often broken, and because it is two threads, it is especially easy to tangle together, which let people feel irritable. However, it also has advantages. Some devices cannot be configured with the traditional console cable, even some manufacturers’ switches and routers do not use the same console cable. In this case, this console cable will come in handy, because there is usually a complimentary DB9 to RJ45 cable in the device. That’s why the old engineers is still reluctant to throw it away.

4. RS232 adapter

This adapter is basically the same as the split type above, except that there is no wire, so that a section of wire can avoid entangling to a greater extent, and it is more portable. However, the only drawback is that if you encounter a very old device such as Cisco 300 series switch, whose console port is not RJ45, but directly has a DB9 port on the back of the switch. So it’s not very convenient in this case. What`s more, such devices are not common. Therefore, choosing a Bluetooth console cable or an all-in-one console cable with a adapter is a safe bet.

  • Usb line

If you forget the console cable and happen to have a USB port on your device, you just need to find a USB cable and plug it in. Where can you find a USB cable? Alright, most of the mechanical keyboard wires are this line. So if one day you need to solve this kind of problem, you can use it.

5. Tap console line

In extreme cases, it is possible to make your own console cable. For example, your only console cable is broken by a cabinet door clamp, by a falling device, or by a cabinet foot. You can try to do it yourself by the picture above. Some students may have seen all the lines in books when learning CCNA, but it is not commonly used because it needs to be equipped with a serial port to RJ45 converter.

6. Serial port connection

First let’s connect the console cable and click on the computer  right click → Administration → Device Manager → Ports (COM and LPT) and look at our com number and remember, As for my pc, it is com3.

Then create a connection in the terminal software and select Serial as the protocol. The port is com3 as we just checked in device manager. And the commonly used baud rate is 9600 and 115200, while some manufacturers’ devices use other baud rates. For details, you can check the manufacturer’s documents if the connection is not available. Other configuration default and flow control do not check just click connect to log in.
