CCNA network engineers entry knowledge: Server virtualization

The concept of virtualization was first proposed in the 1960s to achieve partitioning of mainframe hardware that is rare and expensive resources. With the development of microcomputers and PCs that can provide more effective and economical methods for allocating processing power and hardware, virtualization technology is no longer widely used.

With the development of IT technology, virtualization technology exhibits more features and advantages. For example, CPU virtualization technology can simulate multiple CPUs in parallel with a single CPU, allowing a platform to run multiple operating systems at the same time, and applications can interact with each other. Operate in independent spaces without affecting each other, thereby significantly improving the efficiency of the computer.

Server virtualization technology abstracts server physical resources into logical resources, turning a server into several or even hundreds of isolated virtual servers. We are no longer limited by physical boundaries, but let CPU, memory, Hardware such as disks and I/0 becomes a “resource pool” that can be dynamically managed, thereby improving resource utilization, simplifying system management, realizing server resource integration, and making IT more adaptable to business changes.

Server virtualization technology adopts a pure software approach, that is, a system called a host operating system is still installed on the hardware layer, and virtual machine software (VMS) is deployed on it. According to actual application requirements, VMS can integrate A physical computer virtualizes multiple partitions, and each partition is called a virtual machine (VM). The virtual machine has a complete computer application environment, including hardware layer (provided by VMS), driver interface layer (provided by VMS), operating system (Guest OS Layer), and application layer (Applications), all of which are built on the computer

In terms of environment, it belongs to user-level software. This way users can install applications “whatever they want.” The key to implementing this virtualization technology lies in the reliability of the virtual machine software.

For an independent physical server, an operating system is installed on this server, and corresponding applications are installed on the operating system. This traditional architecture is that an independent physical server is used as an application server. After server virtualization, the data of an independent physical server is virtualized into several independent hosts. These hosts can be installed with other operating systems separately, and various applications can be installed on the operating systems.
