CCNP/ HCIP: NTP server configuration in multicast mode

CCNP HCIP network engineer technical foundation

NTP server configuration in multicast mode

In a network with scattered servers, in order to facilitate the client to find the nearest server and synchronize, the multicast mode can be used at this time. This mode is applicable to the environment where server changes do not affect the entire network. In this case, server instability will not affect the networking environment.

The multicast server will continue to listen for messages. If a server that can be synchronized is found, the server will use the client’s unicast address to return the Mode field to 4 packets.

The multicast client will periodically use IPv4/IPv6 to send a request message with the Mode field set to 3 to the corresponding multicast address. When the client receives the response message from the server, the client performs clock filtering and selection, and synchronizes to the server with the preferred clock.

In the multicast mode, the client continuously sends NTP request packets to the multicast server. To prevent frequent packets from increasing the network burden, the client records the connection established during the synchronization every time it synchronizes with the server clock. Number, will call the minimum number of connections, which is the minimum number of connections. When the number of connections mobilized by the client reaches the minimum number of connections and synchronization is completed, the client considers that the synchronization is complete.

For the NTP server in multicast mode, the configuration is as follows:

A. Use the interface interface-type interface-number command to specify the interface that sends NTP broadcast messages.

B. For an Ethernet interface, the configuration under the interface only takes effect for the layer 3 interface, and the layer 2 interface does not take effect.

C. Run the ntp manycast-server [ip-address | ipv6 [ipv6-address]] to configure local traffic

Replace the module as an NTP multicast server.

The configuration of the NTP client is as follows:

A. Use the interface interface-type interface-number command to specify the interface that sends NTP broadcast messages.

B. For an Ethernet interface, the configuration under the interface only takes effect for the layer 3 interface, and the layer 2 interface does not take effect.

C. Run the ntp manycast-client [ip-address | ipv6 [ipv6-address]] [authentication-keyid key-id | ttl ttl-number | port port-number] * to configure local switching as an NTP multicast client.

If you specify the authentication-keyid parameter, configure NTP authentication first.
