How to define VxLAN, or explain VxLAN?
VXLAN is a network virtualization technology that can be used to improve the expansion of large-scale cloud computing during deployment and is an extension of VLAN. It can solve the portability limitation of VMS (Virtual Memory System) by encapsulating the traffic and extending it to the third layer gateway, so that it can access the server on the external IP subnet.
VxLAN (Virtual eXtensible Local Area Network) technology effectively solves the problem that the existing VLAN technology cannot meet the requirements of large Layer 2 networks. The main principle is to introduce an outer tunnel in UDP format as the data link layer, and the original data packet content is transmitted as the tunnel payload, which is a large-two-layer virtual network technology. Because the outer layer uses UDP as the transmission method, the payload data can be easily transmitted in the layer 2 and layer 3 network.
The basic model of VxLAN is shown above. Unlike traditional VLANs, VxLAN has the following characteristics:
(1) The number of Layer 2 network segments has been greatly expanded: the 24-bit VVNI identifier of VXLAN technology provides 16 million VXLAN network segments, far more than 4094 in VLAN. It can meet the needs of multi-tenant network segment separation in data centers.
(2) Greater flexibility: The migration of the original virtual machine can only be performed on the Layer 2 network on the same network segment, which is severely restricted by the geographic location. VXLAN uses tunneling technology to build a virtual Layer 2 network that can span multiple Layer 3 networks, and virtual machines can disperse data at physical locations
The migration between centers makes the deployment of virtual machines more flexible and convenient.
(3) Optimized network operation: Since VXLAN runs on a standard Layer 3 IP network, it is no longer necessary to construct and manage a huge Layer 2 basic transport layer.
(4) Economic: VXLAN is managed by the virtual machine management program inside the physical server, transparent to the virtual machine and ordinary network equipment (such as physical switches, routers), etc., without the need for hardware aspects of existing physical switches and routers Upgrades and renovations.
