5G will enhance Wi-Fi, rather than replace it

It can be said at present there is no specific technical topics 5G Hotter. This is the nearest Mobile World Congress A theme, and it has occupied a dominant position in other activities, such as Enterprise Connect and I attended almost all vendor activities.

5G is touted as the “next big thing.” You would look at it?

Wi-Fi 6 is another – edge computation, Bluetooth low energy (the BLE), artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). All this is very important, each of them has a place.

As with all cellular access, 5G is appropriate if you need a macro area coverage and high-speed switching. But for most enterprise applications, which usually do not need these features. To 5G for major indoor access, customers need to upgrade their networks and almost all devices. 5G outdoors provide good coverage, but the cellular signal can not reliably penetrate buildings. 5G will make this problem worse, it depends in part on higher radio frequency. Thus, service providers need a way to provide indoor coverage. In order to provide such coverage, they suggested deploying DAS or small cellular systems – paid by the end customer. Then, the client will connect their device directly to these cellular systems and equipment to pay for each service component.

There are some problems with this approach. First, DAS and small cellular systems much more expensive than Wi-Fi networks. And the cost of the network will not stop. Each device requires a 5G cellular modem, the wholesale price of up to tens of dollars, while end users typically need to spend more than one hundred US dollars. Because there is little MacBook, PC, printer or modem AppleTV has 5G, it is necessary to upgrade these devices. I do not believe many companies will be willing to pay the additional costs and upgrade their equipment to get the most ambiguous benefits.

Economics is a factor 5G Wi-Fi and debate it?

Economics is always a factor. Let the dialogue focused on indoor enterprise applications, because this is some operators intend to use the 5G positioning use cases.
